Graduate profile – Midwifery and Specific Disciplines

The Midwifery programme is organised around the competencies set out by EU EEC directives. The programme prepares students to take up roles as midwives; the students acquire specialised knowledge and skills, i.e., their professional qualifications, to take care of women and their families – provide supportive, preventive, therapeutic, rehabilitative and assistance services with a view to maximising the physical, mental or social potential of the care provided. A midwife is a person who is able to provide the necessary supervision, care and advice to women during their physiological pregnancies, childbirth, post-natal period, and while taking care of newborns and infants. A midwife is well-versed in the basics of ethics and its practical application in dealing with clients; they have basic grasp of the public health system essentials and business and quality management in health care. The links between theoretical and practical instruction guarantee preparation for the midwife profession in clinical practice.

Midwifery graduates will be able to provide unsupervised, specialised nursing care to pregnant, parturient women, women during the post-natal period and physiological newborns through the nursing process. Under the direct guidance of a physician specialising in gynaecology and obstetrics, they will be able to assists in highly specialised nursing care procedures conducted on women and newborns. The graduates will be able to work for inpatient and outpatient healthcare establishments, in primary and community women and children care services.
